Summary
"From the author of the award-winning, two-volume Matisse: A life, now comes the definitive biography of the English critic, editor, and novelist Anthony Powell that is a sweeping and epic journey into twentieth-century literary London. Celebrated for his twelve-volume comic masterpiece, [this book] was also the author of six other novels, as well as plays and a biography, criticism, four memories, and three volumes of journals. Spurling paints a vivid picture of Powell's early years as a reserved, observant only child and, after Oxford, as a part of a colorful, rowdy, and bohemian London scene between the two world wars when, before making his name, Powell was working for the publisher Gerald Duckworth and Sons and keeping company with hard-up writers, painters, and painters' models, who posed for the likes of Augustus John and Walter Sickert. Henry Green, George Orwell, and Evelyn Waugh were among his closest friends during those years, but his circle would later include the Sitwells, Malcolm Muggeridge, Graham Greene, Cyril Connolly, Elizabeth Bowen, Philip Larkin, and Kingsley Amis, among many others. Spurling explores all these friendships, early love affairs, and the strong marriage that would sustain him while he wrote Dance from 1951 to 1975. Drawing on his letters, diaries, and interviews, Spurling was written an enthralling and intimate story that not only points up the real-life characters and events that inspired Powell's early novels but those in A Dance to the Music of Time, as well. Insightful and poignant, [this book] is as much a rich and vivid window into a seminal moment in London's literary life as it is a dazzling and entertaining portrait of an iconic literary figure."--
