Review
Gr 3-5 –After his father's disappearance, Kenric discovers that the evil Lord Mordig, who usurped the rightful king's throne, has been kidnapping blacksmiths and forcing them to try to re-create the monarch's sword of power. With the help of a mysterious beggar and a goblin named Hnagi, the 11-year-old travels to the capital, where he encounters elves and magical forces in his efforts to save both his father and his land. La Fevers sets up an unremarkable but effective fantasy realm, populated with likable if not gripping characters. Kenric's quest is realistic, aside from his lack of concern for his abandoned mother, and his abilities never exceed his age. Hnagi and other minor figures add some humor to the story, which moves smoothly from start to finish; the action is continuous without being overly violent. This is a good choice for readers not ready for Lloyd Alexander's "Prydain" books, which feature a similarly young and appealing hero, though Blade doesn't have the same level of mythic depth.–Beth L. Meister, Yeshiva of Central Queens, Flushing, NY --Beth L. Meister (Reviewed December 1, 2004) (School Library Journal, vol 50, issue 12, p112)
