  • Books for Youth, Middle Readers: Gr. 4-6. When 11-year-old Julie Welsh begins writing to Mrs. Kaplan, her 89-year-old pen pal at the Shady Villa Care Center, the letters are informative but perfunctory. As the year goes by, however, the school assignment provides Julie with a confidant when she needs one the most. The aches that her mother has referred to as "growing pains" are diagnosed as juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. Julie, whose main problem has been staying out of scrapes led by her younger brother, now finds herself facing a very different set of challenges. Written as a series of letters from Julie to Mrs. Kaplan, the story unfolds with humor as well as pathos and drama. Some of the passages are too long and full of dialogue to be convincing as letters, but they do make good reading as a first-person telling of Julie's story. Children who feel singled out by physical difference, disease, or disability will especially appreciate Kehret's vivid portrayal of Julie's feelings as she tries to maintain a normal life as her world is turned inside out. • Gr 4-6-Fifth-grader Julie writes a series of letters to her pen pal, an elderly woman in a convalescent home, as part of a class project. Shortly after the correspondence begins, the child is diagnosed with pediatric rheumatoid arthritis, yet is committed to running in a fund-raising race and getting on with her life. Through her letters, readers glean information about Mrs. Kaplan, learning that the lonely 89-year-old has terminal cancer. Although the outcomes are predictable, the incidents are treated with humor and sensitivity. This popular and prolific author has crafted a well-written examination of courage, dignity, and determination at both ends of the age spectrum. The antics of Julie and her mischievous younger brother add enough lightness to make this a quick, but meaningful read.-Sharon McNeil, Los Angeles County Office of Education Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.
