Summary
Written in response to the Chatauqua Institution's invitation to give a lecture about major trends of the 20th century, this "shrink-wrap version" of Rosenblatt's novel, Lapham rises, recounts his imaginary war with the Laphams, a family building a grotesque space-age-style house across the creek from Rosenblatt's own house. As the story unfolds, the Laphams' house and their lifestyle become metaphors for everything that Rosenblatt found distasteful about the 20th century
