Abstract
In 1957, Chairman Mao declared a new openness in China : "Let a hundred flowers bloom; let a hundred schools of thought contend." With many intellectuals fearing that it was a trap, Kai Ying's husband, Sheng, a headstrong teacher, promised not to jeopardize his family's safety. Nevertheless, one early July morning, Sheng was dragged away for writing a letter criticizing the Communist Party and sent to a labor camp to be "reeducated."
