Summary
This the story of the men who, in an unprecedented feat of engineering, vision, and courage, built the Transcontinental Railroad. With this enterprise, with its huge expenditure of brainpower, muscle, and sweat, the U.S. government pitted two companies -- the Union Pacific and the Central Pacific Railroads -- against each other to unite the east and west coasts of the country by rail.
