Summary
Philanthropist Ward Melville was an extraordinary Long Islander. This video details many of his exceptional accomplishments. He was the president of the Melville Corporation, the nation's third largest retailer in the 1980's. He was a founding member of the Long Island Association and Commerce & Industry. Melville created the nation's first planned business community in 1941, by reconstructing the Hamlet of Stony Brook; preserved numerous historic structures; created an 88-acre wetlands preserve at West Meadow Creek; and established The Museums at Stony Brook. He was instrumental in creating the Three Village School District and he donated over 600 acres of land to New York State to help create what is now the State University at Stony Brook
