Summary
This collection houses the working papers of Mann’s time as a resident on Long Island, beginning in 1982, with a significant focus on her work in Sag Harbor. The collection, which dates from circa 1982 to 2017, consists of articles, scripts, public relations material, photographs, audiocassettes, videotapes, DVDs, and born-digital files. The strength of this collection as it pertains to local history in Sag Harbor is found in Mann’s vital role as an active participant in the creative activist community, which includes her organizational involvement in a hunger walk to raise funds for Kenya (1986), the second Sag Harbor Initiative (1988), Art ‘Round Town (1988-1989), the East End Planning Initiative (1990), and triggering protest against the Iraq War on the East End with a group that later became the East End Women in Black (2002-2003)A further strength of the collection centers on Mann’s journalism for North German Radio’s English Language radio feature U.S. Diary, which consists of typescripts and audio. Airing from 1987 to circa 1990, Mann wrote and recorded these slice of life entries about living in Sag Harbor and the East End of Long Island, intended as a way to teach English to German listeners. Today, they provide a fascinating look into the everyday world of this geographic location at that particular time. Among other topics, they reference the region at the start of the crises of unaffordable housing and environmental issues - problems that have only escalated and are yet to be resolved at the time of this writing. for local publications such as Newsday, SunStorm Arts Magazine, House in the Hamptons International, Southampton Press, East Hampton Star, and the New York TimesThis collection also includes Mann’s 1992 master’s thesis on Sag Harbor Elementary School’s communication with the Sag Harbor community; her live readings, spoken word events, and theatrical performances; her work as an author of fiction and nonfiction; and her work as a filmmakerThe collection does not contain Mann’s work as a children’s author, although there are articles written about her work as a children’s author. There is some material on her time as a teacher, though it is not a large part of this collection
